Take care of yourself for a day and take care of victims of atrocities for a lifetime…
Please join Pamper for a Purpose at Director’s Park in beautiful downtown Portland, Oregon.
Date: July 28, 2013
Time: 2pm – 7pm for an afternoon of pampering, entertainment, education, and inspiration
Suggested donation: Only $20 per service!
Pamper for a Purpose will enable everyone to enjoy a massage, hair care, manicure, other pampering services, music and art projects while benefiting the women and girls in Darfur and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
For each suggested $20.00 donation, you will have the opportunity to visit any of our wonderful participating practitioners and local businesses that have graciously donated services and auction items to help create a safe environment for these women and girls.
Onsite you will have the opportunity to hear live music, bid in a silent auction, participate in a raffle, and learn more information about Darfur and the Congo and what we all can do to help.
We’ll also have a kids area set up with balloons, face painting, art, & more!
The highlight of the day will include a demonstration of the solar cookers! Pamper for a Purpose will help purchase from the donated proceeds of this event, which will enable women in refugee camps to cook much needed meals without making dangerous treks out of the camps that may subject them to unimaginable violence.
We encourage you to stop by, pamper yourself, and take part in this movement to improve the lives of these women. Feel great while doing good.
“The pampering I do is the extreme opposite of what the people in Darfur and the Congo experience in their daily life. I can’t imagine the struggle they face. We are so lucky to be here. I had to do something.” – Denise Wetherell, Hair Stylist & Event Founder
What is Pamper for a Purpose?
Pamper for a Purpose is a grassroots effort to raise awareness and funds to stop genocide in Darfur and the Congo.
It all began when Denise Wetherell’s then 12-year old daughter Anna came home straight from a class that was being taught about genocides that were happening right now and said to her mother, “We have to do something.” Denise agreed.
As a Lake Oswego hairdresser, Denise began once a month donating a day’s worth of earnings to the cause, while her daughter contributed by selling handmade silk flower hair accessories. Both mother and daughter spread the word and continued to send monthly checks until an inspired network of friends decided to come together for one day in the park, donating services such as massage, reflexology, haircuts and more. From that one day in the park grew Pamper for a Purpose.
Every day around 1,200 women and girls are raped, beaten, and murdered in the Congo. Taking shelter in refugee camps, these women and girls of genocide face attack when they venture forth from the camp to gather firewood to cook. Pamper for a Purpose works with organization such as Jewish World Watch to raise money to purchase solar cook stoves, so these potential targets can stay within the safety of the camp. By this simple means, Pamper for a Purpose aims to stop needless violence, suffering, and death.
Do something for yourself, while fulfilling your innate desire to do something good for your fellow human beings.
Join us, be pampered, entertained, educated, and inspired. We look forward to seeing you there on July 28th.
We are also accepting donations for raffle/silent auction and door prizes. We also need volunteers to help with event setup and breakdown as well as keeping the event running smoothly. If you can help in any way, or would like to know more about this event, please contact us. We are better together!
Proceeds from this event will go to organizations such as Jewish World Watch working to stop genocide and atrocities in Darfur and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Please visit Jewish World Watch to find out more.
JWW has proven that together we – each of us in our community who stands up, takes notice and refuses to remain silent – can create monumental and permanent change.
